Faculty of physics

The faculty of physics offers undergraduate, graduate and postgraduate; with wide range of options for specialization. Since physics is a subject concerned with the observation and understanding of all basic phenomena in the categories of mater and energy. In this respect it forms the basis of all the other natural sciences right up to life sciences and medicine as well as the bases for engineering and technology. So the physicists in this faculty work on basic and on practically oriented areas. It strive to be at the areas where new physics can be found. Consequently, they works on problems where extreme conditions may reveal new behavior; from cosmology (the cluster of galaxies or the entire universe) to elementary particle physics; from collisions of nuclei at low energy to the effects of interaction of  radiation with matter which are important to industrial and medical applications; from individual atoms to unusual materials, such as high temperature super conductors and those that are important to micro-electronics to nanotechnology and biology (to test theories of the structure and behavior of matter and energy).
The work essentially try to understand the connections within the natural events and also the technical innovations, i.e, the application of physical principles; both theoretical-mathematically and constructive experimentally as theoretical or experimental physics.

Undergraduate study
Bachelor of Science (B.Sc. Hons) in solid state physics
It is eight semester course of studies in physics which provides an excellent basis not only in solid state physics for graduate level and related fields, but also gives a bread basic training in experimental physics which can be useful in applied physics and engineering. The undergraduate curriculum offers students the opportunity to acquire a deep conceptual understanding of fundamental physics. It is the core departmental requirement begin this process. The student then chooses one of two options to complete the degree. The focused option is designed for students who plan to pursue physics program in a career; the felixible option accommodates those who want to tailor their physics program in a way that reflects broader interests, as well as those who are interested in other perhaps nontraditional career path.it should be noted that both options lead to the same degree: Bachelor of Science (B.Sc. Hons) in solid state physics.

Graduate study
The physics faculty offers programs leading to the degrees of Master of Science in condensed matter, Gravitation and cosmology as well as applied Nuclear physics; Doctor of philosophy
in condensed matter and applied Nuclear physics.
The normal program for M. Sc. In physics is usually two years course carried in the related fields involved.
In in condensed matter the aims are to discover the properties of matter in its different phases and try to understand them from fundamental principles of quantum mechanics, electromagnetism and statistical mechanics. It is carried in a broad range of areas of experimental, theoretical and computational physics.
In the gravitation and cosmology the activity is a purely theoretical, in one  way or another related to Einstein's general theory of  relativity (GR), from attempts to better understanding GR by studying various phenomena, to investigations of modified theories of gravity, cosmology and astrophysics are also arenas for applications of  GR: from very early universe to the late time epochs. The diversity of these activities grow even further, when combined with developments in particle physics or speculative ideas of quantum gravity.
In the applied nuclear physics, the study goes towards the Nuclear reaction and radiation in low-energy as well as the effects of interaction of radiation with matter for mainly their medical and industrial application.
It should be noted that in any mentioned fields, a masters' thesis must represent a piece of independent research work in any of the relative fields described above and must be carried out under the supervision of a department faculty member. Two semester work is a rough guide line for the completion of thesis.

Doctor of philosophy
Candidates for the doctor of philosophy or doctor of science are expected to enroll in those basic graduate subjects that prepare them for the general examination.
No specific subjects of study are prescribed, except for the requirement of two subjects in the candidate's doctoral research area and two subjects outside the candidate's field of specialization. The doctoral thesis must represent a substantial piece of original research, carried out under the supervision of a department faculty member too.
The physics department faculty members offer subjects of instruction and are engaged in research in a variety of fields in experimental and theoretical physics. The graduate students are encouraged to contact faculty members in the division of their choice to inquire about opportunity for research, and to pass through an apprenticeship as first step towards an engagement in independent research for a doctoral thesis.

Research division and interests: Faculty and students in any departments of physics are generally affiliated with one of several research divisions and interests:
I) Gravitation and cosmology
II) Theoretical and applied Nuclear physics
III) Condensed matter
IV) Plasma physics

Much of the research in the department is created out as part of the work of various interdisciplinary laboratories and centers.
Inquiries: Additional information on degree programs, research activities admissions financial aid, teaching and research assistantships may be obtained by contacting the relative department at physics [at] kntu.ac.ir
